Advocating for your child

ARTICLES RELATED TO CHILD AMPUTEES WITH A
TRAUMATIC AMPUTATION OR CONGENITAL LIMB DIFFERENCE WHO WEAR PEDIATRIC PROSTHESES

Included below are links to three articles with different perspectives, concerning the prosthetic care of child amputees, who wear artificial limbs, due to a congenital limb difference or following a traumatic amputation.

The article, written for parents by Dr. Clark, highlights the importance of building your child's self-esteem by accepting your child just as they are, regardless or whether they choose to wear a myoelectric arm prosthesis or go without any prosthesis at all.

The comments by Alan Leingang, both as an engineer and a father, offer many insights into the daily challenges of living with a child who wears an electronic hand. He also points out several factors to consider in deciding, when to fit your child with a bionic arm, choosing a prosthetist, dealing with insurance issues and looking at the long term implications of how advanced technology will affect the usefulness of prosthetic arms for kids in the future.

The last article by Carl Brenner presents an overview of clinical and technical aspects of designing, building and fitting hundreds of electronic pediatric prostheses to children with an acquired limb loss or congenital limb difference.
